The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Upscaler

Upscaling is the last step in the image generation process after applying products, editing, or resizing layers. Upscalers add more detail to the image and increase the image resolution.

Upscalers intelligently add missing detail and increase image resolution, going far beyond simple pixel stretching to deliver production-ready, high-quality outputs.

Navigate to the left toolbar and click on the Upscale icon, then use the dropdown menu to switch between the Fluid, Crystal, and SeedVR Upscalers.

Select the Upscale icon from the left toolbar, then use the dropdown menu to choose between Upscalers.

The best upscaler for your image depends on the garment type, the level of skin detail needed, and whether text or logos are present.

1. Fluid Upscaler

Fluid is one of our legacy upscalers, renowned for providing the best skin texture enhancement with smooth, natural transitions.

✅ Best for:

  • Medium to minimal texture garments (t-shirts, simple silhouettes)
  • Images where background greenery and smooth skin are priorities
  • Close-up model shots where hyper-real skin is the goal

🚫 Avoid when: Your image has very fine textures, detailed patterns, text where crispness is the main goal.

💡 Face Enhancement Tip: Keep Face Enhancement enabled to add detail to skin and facial features. Turn it off if the face is changing too much, or for headshots, reflections, mirrors, or images where face details are being distorted.

2. Crystal Upscaler

Crystal Upscaler is designed for versatility, offering a precise balance of skin texture and sharpness while preserving the details of prints and patterns. It delivers results that look naturally sharp rather than artificially enhanced.

✅ Best for:

  • Denim, ribbed materials, fur, leather, and knits
  • Complex patterns and repeated designs
  • Portraits where facial feature sharpness and eye clarity are critical
  • Product photography requiring zoom-ready detail

🚫 Avoid when:

  • You need non-destructive, color-faithful upscaling. Crystal's higher creativity settings can introduce an "artistic" look that strays from the original image tone.

Creativity Control (Most Important Setting)

  • The Creativity slider is Crystal's defining feature. Setting it correctly is crucial for best results.

Image Type

Recommended Creativity

Notes / Reason

Fine textures, fabrics, denims, ribbed details, thin stripes, rigid patterns

6

Preserves very fine details and minute patterns; for subtle textures, experiment with 4–6.

Solid garments, medium to minimal texture, fur, leather, knits, repeated patterns, textured backgrounds

8

Enhances sharpness, skin and product details while maintaining overall structure; for varied textures or detailed backgrounds, 7–9 can be tried.

💡 Resolution Tip: The Upscale By control determines how much to increase the resolution. You can upscale 2x twice rather than 4x once to preserve image similarity and prevent over-processing.

3. SeedVR Upscaler

SeedVR produces high-quality results, enhancing fine textures while maintaining lifelike tone. It is a non-destructive upscaler meant to preserve your original details at the cost of less artificial sharpness.

It is a middle ground for those who need high-fidelity outputs without the artistic, painterly renders sometimes found in high-creativity scale for Crystal Upscaler.

✅ Best for:

  • Text Accuracy is Critical: SeedVR is currently the best choice for handling text within an image, ensuring letters and logos remain legible and structured compared to the softening of Fluid.
  • Lifelike Skin: The skin shows realistic stretch and pore detail, and the lips gain richness and structure without breaking the natural shading of the face.
  • Intricate Patterns: Like Crystal, it works exceptionally well for intricate patterns, but with a more natural color science.
  • High Resolution outputs: It can upscale images up to 8K resolution, by stacking multiple upscale passes while maintaining high-fidelity detail.

Image Similarity Setting

SeedVR is set to 3.5 Image Similarity by default for the best balance of skin detail while maintaining text and pattern integrity.

Similarity Value

Effect

3.5 (default)

Best balance — skin detail preserved, text and patterns intact

2 – 2.5

Finer detail unlocked; slight departure from original

🚫 When NOT to Use SeedVR Upscaler

  • If your goal is hyper-defined, aggressive skin pores for extreme close-ups, SeedVR produces slightly less "punchy" texture compared to Crystal or Fluid. For that sharp, high-contrast skin look, Crystal or Fluid remain the better choice.

Which Upscaler Should You Choose?

Selecting the right upscaler is a balance between the material of the garment and the intended "feel" of the final image.

💡 Input Image quality matters: All upscalers, work best from the cleanest source image available. Heavily compressed or artifact-laden images will amplify existing problems.
