Choosing the Right Upscaler: When to Use Fluid, Crystal, and Seed VR Upscalers

Upscaling is the last step in the image generation process after applying products, editing, or erasing layers. Upscalers add more detail to the image and increase the image resolution.

Navigate to the left toolbar and click on the Upscale icon, then use the dropdown menu to switch between the Fluid, Crystal, and SeedVR Upscalers.

Select the Upscale icon from the left toolbar, then use the dropdown menu to choose between Upscalers.

1. Fluid Upscaler

Fluid is one of our legacy upscalers, renowned for providing the best skin texture enhancement with smooth, natural transitions.

  • ✅ Use when: Your image has scenes with medium to minimal texture (products) or with background greenery, and skin texture are priorities. Close up images of models where skin texture is crucial for hyper-real images.
  • 🚫 Avoid when: Your image has very fine textures or detailed patterns, text where crispness is the main goal.

Tip: Keep Enable Face Enhancement enabled to add details to the skin and face. You can turn it off if you feel the face is changing too much. This should be turned off for headshots or images with reflections, mirrors or incase face details are being distorted.

2. Crystal Upscaler

Crystal Upscaler is designed for versatility, offering a precise balance of skin texture and sharpness while preserving the details of prints and patterns.

  • ✅ Use when: You need enhanced texture for denim, ribbed materials, fur, and leather. It offers a balance of skin texture clarity and works well for rendering patterns or repeated designs.
  • Creativity Control: This is the most important setting. Use Creativity 6 for fine textures and Creativity 8 for solid garments or textured backgrounds.

Upscale By controls how much to increase the resolution by. You can upscale by 2x twice, rather than upscale by 4x once to preserve image similarity.

Creativity- This is the most important setting in Crystal Upscaler, you have the freedom to choose the creativity level. It is important to use the correct Creativity values in this upscaler for best results.

Image Type

Recommended Creativity

Notes / Reason

Fine textures, fabrics, denims, ribbed details, thin stripes, rigid patterns

6

Preserves very fine details and minute patterns; for subtle textures, you can experiment with 4–6.

Solid garments, medium to minimal texture, fur, leather, knits, repeated patterns, textured backgrounds

8

Enhances sharpness, skin and product details while maintaining overall structure; for varied textures or detailed backgrounds, 7–9 can be tried.

3. SeedVR Upscaler

SeedVR produces high-quality results, enhancing fine textures while maintaining lifelike tone. It is a middle ground for those who need high-fidelity outputs without the artistic, painterly renders sometimes found in high-creativity scale for Crystal Upscaler.

✅ Use the SeedVR Upscaler when:

  • Text Accuracy is Critical: SeedVR is currently the best choice for handling text within an image, ensuring letters and logos remain legible and structured compared to the softening of Fluid.
  • Lifelike Features: The skin shows realistic stretch and pore detail, and the lips gain richness and structure without breaking the natural shading of the face.
  • Patterns: Like Crystal, it works exceptionally well for intricate patterns, but with a more natural color science.

SeedVR is set to 3.5 Image Similarity by default. This specific calibration provides the best skin detail while maintaining the integrity of text and patterns within the image.

🚫 When NOT to Use SeedVR Upscaler

  • While SeedVR provides incredible realism, it tends to produce slightly less aggressive skin texture compared to the Crystal and Fluid Upscaler. If your goal is hyper-defined skin pores for extreme close-ups, Crystal or Fluid may still be your preferred Upscaler.
